Floods: Somerville community support
10-February-2011
Mr BURGESS (Hastings) -- An Australian flood disaster prayer service was held in Somerville on Sunday, 30 January. The service provided an opportunity for the local community to gather together in prayer and reflect on those people who tragically have been affected by recent flood events. Prayers and messages of support were offered for the victims and the survivors of the floods in Queensland, Victoria and other areas in Australia.
I would like to pay tribute to the hundreds if not thousands of people locally, across Australia and around the world who generously gave their assistance, money, thoughts and prayers to help out Australians in their hour of need. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the contribution of two Somerville volunteers, Mr David Lloyd and Mr John Punter, who donated a week of their time to travel to Horsham to offer their services as qualified electricians.
Their generous donation of time and expertise to help Australians badly affected by the floods is just the latest in a very long series of acts of humanity and compassion. I would also like to thank Acting Pastor Claudia Mauracher and St Andrew's Anglican Church in Somerville for bringing the community together in prayer and raising much-needed funds for flood victims.
