Hastings MP urges locals to cut their cancer risk

Every year, 430 locals in the Hastings electorate are diagnosed with cancer, and 135 lose their lives to the disease.

Liberal Member for Hastings, Neale Burgess, is on a mission to change this reality by raising awareness that one in three cancer diagnoses is preventable by making healthy lifestyle choices.

The latest data from Cancer Council Victoria shows that 40% of eligible residents aged 50 to 74 in our community take part in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program after receiving a free home screening kit in the mail. This is compared to the state average of 41%. If detected early, 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated.

In Hastings Electorate, 12% of locals are daily smokers, compared to the state average of 10%.

“There are some important steps locals can take to cut their cancer risk by making healthy lifestyles choices and taking part in free screening programs for bowel, breast and cervical cancer,” said Mr Burgess.

“By quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, being SunSmart, and being physically active, you will reduce your risk of cancer. With 1 in 3 Victorians developing cancer by the age of 75, every step you take to reduce your cancer risk is incredibly beneficial to your health.”

Mr Burgess also encouraged residents to try and maintain a healthy weight by getting the right balance between what they eat and how physically active they are.

“Obesity is the second biggest preventable cause of cancer after smoking. In Hastings, 20% of people are obese, compared to the state average of 19%.”

For anyone who has been affected by cancer, information and support is available.

“I encourage any local residents who need support to reach out and access the services and programs available through organisations such as Cancer Council Victoria.”
