Langwarrin Sporting Clubs pay for Labor's AFL Gift

Member for Hastings, Neale Burgess has condemned Daniel Andrews for ripping off Langwarrin sporting clubs, while gifting hundreds of millions of dollars and priceless waterfront land in the heart of Melbourne, to the AFL.

Treasurer Tim Pallas was forced to admit to a Parliamentary Inquiry last week, that neither he, nor Premier Daniel Andrews had any idea what the value of the water-front city land, they gifted to the AFL for its new head-office, was worth!

With breathtaking arrogance the Treasurer also admitted to the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC) they had not even tried to work out if the deal was good for Victorians.

Victorians would be extremely concerned to know that this Labor government is throwing away billions of their tax dollars, as if it was Monopoly money.

Under Labor’s own sporting grant guidelines, the $225m gifted to the billion dollar AFL, would have provided very substantial and badly needed grants to all of Langwarrin’s many sporting clubs, including the Langwarrin Junior & Senior Football and Netball, Basketball, Tennis and Soccer Clubs.

It would have built a Langwarrin pool and aquatic centre.

PAEC also revealed that grassroots clubs would be forced by the Andrews Government to pay at least 3% on loans to upgrade facilities owned by the government or council.

Shadow Minister for Sport Danny O’Brien said grassroots sport was getting a raw deal from the Andrews Labor Government.

“The Liberal Nationals will back grassroots sport. We’ll divert any funds from the Etihad Stadium deal that we can into grassroots sports.”

Quotes attributable to Neale Burgess MP, Shadow Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises:

“Daniel Andrews is prepared to gift the AFL many hundreds of millions of dollars and prime land worth many millions of dollars as well, while our grassroots sports clubs are left with the scraps or nothing,”

“Rapidly growing sporting clubs in my electorate, such as Langwarrin Football & Netball and Cricket and Basketball Clubs are in desperate need of funding after years of receiving nothing from this arrogant Labor Government”.

“It beggars belief that Daniel Andrews is giving a free kick to the AFL while slapping our community sports clubs with interest-bearing loans to upgrade their facilities,” Mr O’Brien said.
